Overweight men have poorer sperm count
In what is described as the largest review of its kind, doctors examined sperm samples coming from 1, 940 men as well as matched them for the donor's the body mass index. The study initiated in September 2010 and was led by Dr Paul Cohen-Bacrie from the Unilabs laboratory of Eylau. Dr Cohen-Bacrie presented the study at the Congress of the European Society of Human Reproduction (ESHRE), which took place in Stockholm from July 3 to 6, 2011.
According to the results presented orally by Dr Cohen-Bacrie, there exists a link between overweight and obesity to a decrease in sperm quality. This effect is reversible by losing weight.
"Excess weight causes a changes in sperm features, probably as a result of hormonal disturbance, which ends up in lower sperm figures, motility and energy source, " said Paul Cohen-Bacrie, scientific director at Eylau-Unilabs with Paris, part of the Swiss-based network of labs in 12 Europe.
